About Us

The AMR* was formed as a result of an ongoing need for a registry that caters to, and provides the registration requirements of, all miniature horse and pony enthusiasts.

The AMR* does not hold the limited view that any one type or size of miniature equine is superior to another.  All miniature enthusiasts are welcome and valued equally whether their interest is showing, breeding or recreation.  As a member of the AMR* you become an important part of Australia's most innovative equine registry.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and as such, it should be left to the market place and/or the show ring to determine the success of a breeding program.

In Australia we are fortunate to have the opportunity to breed the best miniatures in the world. As Australians we are not bound by a closed studbook or height restrictions enabling us to infuse desirable characteristics from other breeds into the miniature gene pool.

Many breeders in Australia are taking advantage of the unrestricted gene pool to create some truly spectacular miniatures that will be second to none in the world. Australia truly is the "lucky country" for miniature breeders.

The AMR* extends an invitation to all miniature and small equine enthusiasts to become part of this exciting new venture.  All feedback, comments and ideas are welcome and encouraged. Your input will help, in enabling us, to represent your interests and your inspirations will be utilized to contribute to the ongoing improvement of the AMR*

The AMR* aim is to promote unity, friendship and competition within the Australian miniature/small horse and pony industry while building national and international communication.

The AMR* was established to record the pedigrees of all eligible Australian miniature/small equines.  The AMR* aim is to enable all miniature/small horses and ponies to be registered including those previously not eligible for registration.

Membership categories are as follows:  Adult, Partnership, Family, Youth, Associate and Overseas.
All memberships are renewable on or before the 1st of July each year.  Members receive 4 issues a year of the AMR* official magazine titled HIGHLITES.

The miniature horse and the miniature pony will be regarded by the AMR* as two distinct types.  While both types are a maximum of 34” or 8.2hh, the miniature and small horses are measured at the base of the last hair of the mane, and the miniature and small ponies are measured at the highest point of the wither.  The miniature horse standard of excellence calls for a scaled down version of a full size horse, while the miniature pony standard of excellence requires the true pony characteristics of the larger pony breeds.

Small horse A & B require the same attributes as the miniature horse.
Small pony A & B require the same pony characteristics as the miniature pony.

All miniature/small horses and ponies are eligible to be registered with the AMR*.   The AMR* will register three distinct height categories of miniature horse and three distinct height categories of miniature pony.

Miniature Horse is open to horses not exceeding 34” or 8.2hh
Small Horse A is open to horses not exceeding 38” or 9.2hh
Small Horse B is open to horses not exceeding 42” or 10.2hh

Miniature Pony is open to all ponies not exceeding 34” or 8.2hh
Small Pony A is open to all ponies not exceeding 38” or 9.2hh
Small Pony B is open to all ponies not exceeding 42” or 10.2hh

Included in the miniature categories of both horse and pony is the addition of a Toy Classification for adult horses and pony’s that measure 30 inches or under.
